Practice: An Essential Element

Posted by - Jay McGrath :: Category - Uncategorized

The importance of practice is astronomical in golf.  To succeed without realistic golf training aids and outdoor or indoor golf practice mats is extremely costly and hard to do.  It often requires lengthy or inconvenient trips to the driving range, where practice is limited to the number of balls you have in a bucket, not the amount of time you need to get your swing to a level of consistency you find adequate.

“Practice is not to take the place of teaching, but to make teaching worthwhile.” -Harvey Penick

“They might be able to beat me, but they’ll never out practice me.” -Jerry Barber

To practice skills and techniques learned from teachers and instructors is imperative. Most golfers do not practice enough because they lack the proper equipment, whether it be a realistic golf driving mat to help improve their driving, or a backyard golf pitching mat and putting training aid to help with their short game at home.  So, look into getting some solid golf training aids, and you will be able to get some great practice in a convenient manner from right out back whenever you need it.

Fat Shots

Posted by - Jay McGrath :: Category - Uncategorized

One of the keys to a successful golf shot is to have a clean swing at the ball, without any real interruption before club hits the ball.  Some golfers, however, struggle with their stroke because they hit the ground well before they hit the ball, thus causing a majority of the power generated with the rotation of their hips and overall dynamics of their swing to be sent into the ground instead of from club-to-ball.  This causes the shot to be “fat” and the ball to travel significantly less than a usual shot will provide.

The problem with a fat shot lies within the practice regimens of many golfers: going to a range, hitting balls on faulty mats, and thinking their shot is fine prior to a round.  By shooting on mats that just let your club slide to the ball, nothing really is gained mechanically from your practice.  Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.  Therefore, it is essential to train with proper equipment.  I would recommend using golf mats that provide you with actual feedback.  Real Feel golf mats provide this type of feedback, and allow for a realistic fat shot while practice.  This gives the golfer a chance to fix their mechanics prior to their round instead of embarrassing themselves on the course.
